Build Each Other Up

So, encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.
1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT)

Let’s take the time this week to contact one of our friends who is a fellow believer to hear how they’re doing, encourage them and pray with them. How many of us cherish a random phone call from someone we know who wants to check in for no other reason than to see how we’re doing and catch up on things?

“…build each other up” is a great concept. Paul talks about believers being different parts of the same body. Each person contributes to the welfare of the whole. There are some things that we do differently than others but comparing ourselves or judging them limits the learning and growth we can gain from them.

We are called to edify each other. That is, to nurture others intellectually and spiritually.

In today’s stressful and troubled world, confidence in our faith and purpose can become wobbly as well. We question if we are doing the right things for God and struggle to keep our balance. Jesus does not want us to take on the world by ourselves. He knows we will be much stronger when we are in relationship not just with Him, but also our brothers and sisters who love Him.

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12 (NIV)

Take a minute to allow God to speak to you about who is waiting for your call and then do something about it. Ephesians 6:8 promises, “ … the Lord will reward each one of us for the good we do… ” We have Good News to share and ears to listen. And, we might well be surprised to discover how great the blessing is that we receive just by taking this simple action.
