“Later, when Bathsheba discovered that she was pregnant, she sent David a message, saying, ‘I’m pregnant.’ Then David sent word to Joab: ‘Send me Uriah the Hittite.’ So, Joab sent him to David.”
2 Samuel 11:5-6 (NLT)
This is a story that most of us remember – the fall of King David. That tragic decision David made opened up multiple situations that could have been avoided. “Could have.” We all have these “I should have, I could have, but I didn’t” regrets. The “what if” moments can keep us depressed and frustrated because we messed up. We don’t know what “could have” happened if David went out to war with his army that spring day. It’s a reality that David made a big mistake and it’s a bigger reality that we, too, have made big mistakes and we have to live with them.
The Good News about our God is that even though David didn’t do the right thing, God always does. God doesn’t change! He continues to show us the way out and continues to show up in our lives because only God can get us out.
David messed up. He committed adultery. He used his power to deceive and lie. He murdered an innocent man. And, he involved other parties in order to keep sinning. What happened to David? He was the man after God’s own heart. I don’t know. What I do know is that this same God that forgave David has forgiven me for my mess ups and wicked ways. That is what I want us to take home. If you have messed up, there is a way out. His name is Jesus Christ, the Person who can help you. He will and He wants to. I wanted to and He received me. Let’s all desire Jesus and repentance so that the world can see our heart of gratitude and our lives transformed. Our testimony!
Let’s not condemn our brothers and sisters for their faults and shortcomings. Pray for them. Show them mercy. Extend forgiveness just as our Father in heaven continues to extend forgiveness to us. We serve a good, good Father. He is willing!
