“You rulers make decisions based on bribes; you priests teach God’s laws only for a price; you prophets won’t prophesy unless you are paid. Yet all of you claim to depend on the Lord. ‘No harm can come to us,’ you say, ‘for the Lord is here among us.'” Micah 3:11 (NLT)
Sometimes people have the wrong reasons for doing work for the Lord. They ask, “What’s in it for me? What do I get in return?” They don’t remember the scripture from Genesis, “I will bless you,” God says to Abraham, “and you will be a blessing.”
Humility must be the center of our conversation and duty. Jesus knows our needs and He will bring us people and finances to advance God’s kingdom as long as we are obedient to His direction and put His will first.
We must stay humble before God with the understanding that “better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere.” Better is one day in the courts doing something for Him and His people. It is better if we do it with the attitude of not expecting anything in return.
There are times we need to recognize individuals for the good work they have done and are doing for the Lord. We should never take advantage of anyone. A simple “thank you” goes a long way and is always appreciated. Let’s express our thanks to someone this week who is generously giving their time, talent or treasure because they love Jesus and people.
Let us not be those persons described in Micah 3:11 who are selfishly looking for some financial benefit or other reward while claiming to depend on the Lord. Jesus paid it all, and we trust Him to fulfill our needs. Our needs have always been met. We don’t follow Jesus to gain anything from people. We follow Jesus’ example to be a servant to all.
That’s who I want to follow, and my prayer is that’s who you want to follow.
As we enter the week of being around family and friends, remember to be a great example of our King, the Servant of all. Serve, clean, prepare, put away, set up, break it down all without expecting anything in return. Your Father in heaven is our reward.
I love you all – let’s be thankful for everything we have.
