God is Our Refuge

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5 (ESV)

“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12 (ESV)

Maybe you have had a situation where you are talking to someone who has no faith or belief in Jesus, and they make the statement, “I would rather be around people who do not say they have all the answers. Christians think they know everything.”

Much of the talk today on social media and other sources give conflicting “truths.” Whom do we trust for the answers? Psalm 118:8 says, “It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in people.” The Word tells us whom to turn to for comfort, love, and direction, but it does not suggest that, as believers, we know everything. We still should ask questions and seek answers.

No, we do not know everything. We are comforted, encouraged, thankful, loved, and blessed by our relationship with our Lord. He gives us everything we need to live. At the same time, He has warned us not to judge and to be humble. We are to go about our lives loving one another and caring for the needy without bringing attention to ourselves.

You do not have to know everything to care about other people. You do not have to know and understand every word of Scripture. We are to obey His command to love. What a great reward we receive when we extend a helping hand to someone who is hurting and struggling. Right? How can we describe the feeling when we dig in our pockets and give an extra donation to relieve another person’s suffering?

When we function as Jesus’ servants, we experience a heartwarming satisfaction—fulfillment. We know we did the Lord’s work. We stepped up. We did not cower from the opportunity to help another person or group of people.

Lord, help us to keep our eyes open to being the servant You asked us to be. In these next few days, please make us aware of a person, family, or group that could use whatever we can give. You know us, Jesus. Some of us are barely making ends meet with our finances. There are still other ways for us to give with our time, skills, and talents. We want to do something because we love You, and You have given everything, including Your life, for us. Thank you, Lord. Amen.
