Plans Change

This change of plans greatly upset Jonah, and he became very angry. So, he complained to the Lord about it: “Didn’t I say before I left home that you would do this, Lord? That is why I ran away to Tarshish! I knew that you are a merciful and compassionate God, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. You are eager to turn back from destroying people.”Jonah 4:1-2 (NLT)

Jonah was told to preach a message of repentance to the city of Nineveh. Hopefully, you know the events that took place. If not, read the four chapters of Jonah. God’s mercy was highlighted on this city, and He needed someone to go there and teach.

Jonah had deep emotional issues with Nineveh, but God chose him. This passage says that what the Lord did to Nineveh greatly upset Jonah. Jonah’s heart wanted Nineveh destroyed. Some say it was because of all the pain the people of the city had purposely done to him and his people.

Have you ever felt this way toward someone?

Have you ever felt this toward a group of people? I have! Even though the people of Nineveh may have deserved to be destroyed, God was the one with the last word and I am glad He was. I was given a second chance thanks to Jesus. I know some people wanted me gone and destroyed at some point. But because of God’s great mercy, I’m here today.

Church, when God’s mercy and grace are highlighted on someone’s life, who are we to disagree with His plans? At one point in our lives His mercy was shining bright on us and He saved us.

As we focus on having a heart toward others, let’s continue to pursue forgiveness, mercy and grace to shine on those we may not like. Our feelings are real, but we must lay them down to Jesus so that His better way can help us see all people the way He does.

Continue to lift up your loved ones who may not know Jesus. May His mercy be evident in their lives. May someone be sent to them to share the Good News about Jesus.

It might be you He sends. Are you ready? God, I pray that we are ready when you send us to reach those who need love and respect. Speak to our hearts as you call us to pray and stand for those who are lost.

Church, be bold and continue to seek your gift which is given through our Comforter, the Holy Spirit. Go and teach others to follow Jesus.
