An End to Gossip and False Witness

“But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.” Matthew 12:36 (NIV)

Why do people gossip?

Some of the reasons are to feel superior; to get revenge; to feel like part of the group; out of jealousy; and so on. As believers, we are called to a higher purpose. First, to guard our tongues so that our words are truth and light. Furthermore, to forgive those who cause harm through their false witness. None of us are perfect; sometimes we need our brothers and sisters to show patience and understanding with our words and behavior.

One person’s weakness might be talking too much and saying things that prove to be false. Another person might struggle with anger. Another with a critical spirit. We all have character flaws. Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:1-2 (NIV), “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way, you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

The Word of God gives us clear direction on the importance of discipline in choosing our words. If this is difficult for us, we need to remember that there is always hope when Jesus is involved. What we have to do is decide to listen to His wisdom.

Part of Ephesians 4:27 says, “ … do not give the devil a foothold.”

Exodus 20: 16 (ESV), “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”

Ephesians 4:25 (ESV) “Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.”

Lord, help us to be careful with what we say. You are wise, and we are confident there is no confusion or misunderstanding that You cannot help us sort out. We ask You, Jesus, for Your influence to turn false witnesses and gossips from their malicious ways; to repent; to think before they speak in the future. We pray for healing for those who have been hurt by gossip. We want to operate from a place of love with everyone just as You have taught us how to love. Amen

Be strong in your conviction knowing the Way of Jesus is the path to life and goodness. Vengeance is God’s. No one who spreads falsehoods will go unpunished. We are to pursue love.
